We are seeking a deeply analytical, entrepreneurial, style-engaged, and process-driven leader to join our rapidly growing lifestyle business, AllModern, and oversee several of our top product categories.  The Associate Director will build and execute a strategy to grow market share and profitability across a set of categories and partner with the Director of Merchandising of AllModern to grow the broader business and team.  AllModern is a small team with high visibility and strategic importance to the Wayfair portfolio, and this is an excellent opportunity for an energetic, focused and ambitious professional who wants to make a significant impact in a fast-paced environment and gain leadership and GM experience. 


As an Associate Director you will lead several core categories that comprise a substantial portion of AllModern’s business.  You will set and execute a strategy for these categories while managing a team of Category and Promotions Associates.  You will develop a deep understanding of the AllModern customer, product selection, competitive landscape, promotional levers and execute a plan for growth that involves selection planning, vendor management and negotiations, merchandising and shopping experience improvements, daily and seasonal promotions, inventory planning, and process and operations improvement.  This is a highly cross-functional role and collaborating across internal teams will be critical to achieving your objectives. 


This role requires a balance between analytical thinking, effective communication, and creativity.  A passion for retail and the home/design world is a plus. 


  • Drive profitable growth in your categories
  • Develop category strategies and execute plans to achieve revenue and profitability goals
  • Develop a deep understanding of our target customer and partner with the Director of Merchandising and other business leaders to deliver a brand and site experience that advances AllModern’s competitive positioning to rapidly gain market share
  • Build strong relationships with suppliers and execute negotiations to secure best pricing, sales programs, and promotional support
  • Analyze data to strategize revenue and profit growth opportunities for the category and drive the analytical development of the team
  • Advance catalog expansion, including the identification of selection gaps, the prioritization of new item production, and the development of relationships with new, target suppliers
  • Analyze competitors’ marketing, selection and pricing and make strategic changes and product scouting as needed
  • Collaborate across departments to drive business goals (departments include Marketing & Advertising, Site Merchandising, Inventory Planning, Product Management, Supplier Operations, PR, Customer Service, Business Intelligence)
  • Maintain industry expertise; keep abreast of trends and new product ideas
  • Lead a team of 3-6 individuals; develop talent for Category leadership
  • Lead process improvements across the business
  • Leverage technology to enhance business goals / customer experience
  • Attend tradeshows to visit key suppliers and source new product (4-8 times per year in cities such as New York and Las Vegas)


Desired Skills & Experience:

  • MBA from top tier school preferred
  • 3 to 7 years relevant experience, preferably in management consulting, ecommerce or retail environment
  • Demonstrated experience delivering against aggressive targets & goals in a fast-paced, rapidly evolving environment
  • Senior presence; able to clearly and consistently work side-by-side with a broad range of seniorities and functions to achieve objectives
  • Ability to hit the ground running – a confident, entrepreneurial self-starter
  • Heavily quantitative – able to dive into large data sets, create insights that drive action
  • Effective manager and team motivator with experience managing and/or mentoring multiple direct reports
  • Articulate, persuasive communicator 
  • Strong negotiating skills
  • Process oriented, with a tireless focus on quality of output and throughput
  • Innovative problem-solving skills – dissect and determine root causes of problems, and implement solutions
  • Experience in business and data analytics, Excel, SQL
  • Willing and available to travel
  • Comfortable in technology-driven business environment
  • Interest in home décor, home furnishings, and/or other home products; an eye for the modern aesthetic a plus
