Job Description

The Operations Research team at Wayfair is looking for a technical leader with excellent analytical skills. You will lead a team of talented software engineers tackling complex, large scale optimization problems with immediate impact on Wayfair's business. This role will give you the opportunity to mentor junior engineers and analysts, take ownership of the technical design of systems, and contribute your own code in areas where your expertise matters the most.

Your responsibilities will include identifying technologies, tools, and processes that will help the team deliver maximum value; improving performance of Python/Cython/C++ code; helping define best practices for maintainability; working with other engineering teams to design and integrate systems; and navigating organizational constraints.  We take code quality seriously, with practices like code review and continuous integration processes to help us build reliable systems.

 Sample Team Projects:

  • Building a system to support the optimization of the Wayfair delivery network
  • Generating replenishment proposals for hundreds of thousands of products
  • Selecting, in real time, warehouses to use to fulfill customer orders
  • Finding optimal pick lists and routes for warehouse personnel as they pull orders, and optimal positioning of products within a warehouse


  • Strong quantitative skills
  • Back-end programming expertise
  • Expertise with Python
  • Experience with relational datastores
  • Experience with large-scale distributed computation
  • Proven ability to communicate cross functionally
  • The ability to define and structure an approach to loosely-defined problems
  • Experience with scientific or high-performance computing

 Bonus points for:

  • Experience with a systems-level language like C, C++, or Rust
  • Experience designing and implementing web services
  • Experience with mathematical optimization software development
  • Knowledge of Python optimization approaches and technology
  • Familiarity with probability, statistics, or mathematical optimization techniques like linear and integer programming
